I went on a foray yesterday...a body can just only stand so much of being in side and being organized...lol...frogs to the herb boxes and seed boxes and good intentions for things not yet mailed...I needed out.
Weather was cool and windy...perfect for a long walk without concerns of a heavy water bottle stuck in my bottomless backpack as Hillery refers to that old burgundy bag. I took Max of course and he had a grand time romping around...seems both of us where due for a leg stretching meander down my favorite paths.
I stopped to pick some of the best wild apples I have seen to date...figures the heaviest item for my bag would be the first thing I would pick. With 5 easy kilometers ahead of me before I would be done with this walk I did ponder waiting until I got back to load the bag...but I know me and best to collect what I see when I see it.
I also spotted my easy access hawthorn trees...they are PDC at the moment...as are the False Solomon's Seal and wild Grapes. Mountain ash is PDC as well...but that being a after frost harvest that particular item is no surprise....and also tells me that the rose hips across the canal are PDC as well.
***Now I know you are setting there scratching you head wondering what PDC stands for...it is what I mumble to myself when I see harvests that are pretty close to ready...You can fill in the "D" part yourself. :-)
Down the path I went collecting a bit of this and mentally marking that for later harvest. Seeds are high on my list of collectable items at the moment and I did get a few mullein, burdock and Saint John's Wort seed though the big haul is PDC...lol
I found and collected a few blackberries...they are not abundant around here but I was able t collect enough for a nice topping for my cereal this morning if I eat breakfast. If I don't the kids can have them to nibble later.
I also collected two nice bundles of mugwort...there is something to be said about places that mow...but don't mow on a regular basis...it keeps me in good fresh..new growth harvest of items like yarrow, mugwort and red raspberry leaves...the caretakers mow...I wait and in a couple of weeks new growth is at the right height to make a good harvest. Other than that I have little use for their mowing...but will take mowing over spraying any day. I am just glad they are lazy mowers...but with a path over 10 K long an occasional bush-hog once a month is the best they do...
My backpack weighed more than I do by the time I got back to the car...mullein, coltsfoot, plantain, yarrow and many other greens where packed inside or hanging in bundles to swing with each stride as I meandered along...and Andree asks me why he is getting fat and I stay the same...he should walk with me sometime...lol
