Indian Pipe (Monotropa uniflora):
Common names: Indian Pipe; Bird's Nest; Ghost Flower; Ice Plant; Dead
Man's Fingers, etc.
Contain no chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesize & create nutrients. It
is parasitic on myzorrhiza, tiny fungi on forest floor.
Translucent and appears white. Thick stem covered w' scaly bracts which
end in single nodding flower that is 1/2-1" long. 4-5 petals and a dozen
stamen. Height is 3-9". No true leaves.
Blooms June through September.
Grows in rich, shady woodlands.
