Notes on growing mullein (V. thapsus or V. olympicum), for all those I am sending seeds to or who are collecting their own:
(This is based on information from Richo Cech of Horizon Herbs) Mullein is a light-dependent germinator. Sow seed on surface of disturbed soil or on surface of flat. Compact down hard. Keep moist until germinated. Seedlings transplant well and require little care past occaisional watering when they are young. Tolerates poor, gravelly soil and fierce sun, and once established is extremely drought tolerant. Plant 1 foot apart for V. thapsus (common mullein). Flowers in the second year. For greek mullein (Verbascum olympicum), same instructions as above, but best started in flats or pots (seeds are tiny and dry out easily if not kept where you will remember to water them until they germinate).
Transplant out to 2 feet apart.
