The Prepared Wild Forager

All these weeds and nothing to eat?

Plants

The ability to identify plants and know their propertiesis important. What do they look like? How do you identify them? Are they poisonous or not? Are the plants edible, medicinal, or both? Will this plant interact with the medicines you are taking? You need to know this. Why? Because those plants could keep you from starving or medicate you in case of illness.

First thing: where are you and where do you plan on bugging out (if that is your plan). What USDA growing zone are you (or your bug out spot) in (go here to find out: National Arboretum - USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map)? Next, you need to identify the edible plants that grow wild in both areas. The best way to do that (or at least this is what I did) is go to your state's noxious weed website (this is a good site to start with: USDA Plants - Invasive and Noxious Weeds. Look for weeds that you recognize, then go here: Plants For A Future - 7000 useful plants. Search by the Latin name of the weed, and find out if it's edible, medicinal, poisonous, or none of the above. That's how to begin. Now, there are many books and website that focus on wild edible plants that you have many routes to take to further your knowledge.

This page includes information about specific plants AND animals.

If you know of, or have a website that you feel should be included on this page, let me know at sustainablehome at survivalistssite.com.
